Ah, January. A month of collective trying and failing. Is it a British thing, New Year’s resolutions, do you think? I bet the French don’t do it, they probably think we’re bonkers. I can’t really see a Frenchman, fuelled by the residual guilt from a bingey December, tearfully swearing off Cote du Rhone and saucisson for a calendar month. So, whether you’re puritanically sticking to your vows of abstinence, or you’ve given up on giving up, here’s some suggestions for the weekend that is almost upon us.
If you really must continue with all this healthy January malecowpoo, then there’s a ‘hotpod’ popping up on Saturday at Jubilee Primary School on Tulse Hill. This, it seems, is a sort of inflatable room, which is made very hot, in order that the yoga you do inside it is even more unpleasant than strictly necessary. Sounds awful. It’s £10, and starts at 12.30pm. Or, for exercise at a lower temperature join the Brockwell Park Run. It takes place every Saturday at 9am (9am!) and is a 5k run around the park, starting from the Lido, stewarded and timed by volunteers. It’s free but you’ll need to register on the website if you’ve never joined in before.
For something more sedate but still non-alcoholic swing by Studio 73 in Brixton Village and check out an exhibition of illustrations by local artist Chris Eghweree. It starts on Friday, and you’ve got all week to go and take a look.
Or, alternatively, fall off the wagon and let it reverse back over you at the Electric Social on Friday where Radio Kings will be mixing a live band and some open mic, and featuring R&B, hip hop, dub and jazz. According to their website they’ll be ‘tak[ing] it back to the Essence of Hiphop – Peace, Love and Righteous Vibes’. If this sounds far too friendly however, you might want to try Hootananny, where nine-piece Riot Jazz will be playing ‘a twisted mix of funk, soul, hiphop and aggressive jazz’. In your face, January.
And, of course, if you want to get back into fitness on Monday, there’s also Brixton Blog’s new running club.

It’s hard to find educated people in this
particular topic, but you sound like you know what you’re talking about!
Thanks

Thanks for the cultural insight Charlotte! Of course, I could have Googled it but I knew someone in Brixton would know! No, I have no idea why you might give up cote du Rhone – I am drinking some right now.
Hello there,
Just to answer yourquestion, the French do NY resolution as well (drinking less, do a bit of sport, smoke less…), but I never heard anyone talking of abstinence…that is insane! And why on earth stop Cote du Rhone and saucisson?! 😉
Good luck to everyone in Brixton with their resolutions!
Cheers
