rebelcornerszacmonroarchitectsBrixton Design Trail returns for a third year as London Design Festival’s newest District starting this weekend and running till 25 September. This year’s theme Rebel Rebel, pays homage to David Bowie, a Brixton local.    For full listings visit.

DISTRICT HIGHLIGHTS

Animating Brixton will showcase large scale art commissions in public spaces including streets, hoardings and road crossings. Walking Tours will document the areas new and established street art and murals.

BCA photo for See Me Here exhibitionMajor installations include a celebration of market life at Brixton Village and Market Row with a floor installation Fabric of Brixton and supersized Pakaji ‘Spiders of Straw’ hanging from the roof.  Windrush Square will host youth design project Windows of Brixton at the Brixton Ritzy, and the Black Cultural Archives’ installation We Stand As Living Monuments in the heritage centre’s courtyard, which will also feature a projected photographic exhibition of Brixton life since the 1990s by Liz Johnson‐Artur.

Local gallery Photofusion, with photography collective Rockarchive, will present an exhibition celebrating Bowie’s life and career as remembered by the music photographers who knew and worked with him, including pictures never exhibited in the UK before.
Pattern and print studio Eley Kishimoto ‐ creative ambassadors to Brixton Windmill in their bicentenary year ‐ will use their striking bespoke Flash Sails to power the mill and grind wheat during the Heritage building’s Open Day on Sunday 18 September.

Brixton Street Gallery illustrationArchitects Squire and Partners will create the Brixton Street Gallery for the second year running, collaborating with local artists to create a dynamic animated route with skateable urban furniture.  Zac Monroe Architects, working with Ovalhouse Theatre, will present animated Rebel Corners to highlight areas significant to Brixton locals.

The Champion Agency's people posts only in BrixtonThe Champion Agency will present The People’s Posters, a bold graphic platform sharing public feedback on ‘Great Brixton’.  An evening of talks by local design advocates will showcase the area’s take on Re‐imagining Urban Life, from establishing a local currency and managing a sustainable environment, to protecting Brixton’s identity and shaping its future.

Design Unboxed will host a week‐long showcase of the role design plays in  Pop Brixton with a series of markets, talks and interactive events bringing together fashion, architecture, food and music.

 

FAMILIES AND YOUNG PEOPLE

New this year,  the Youth Design Trail gives young people the opportunity to showcase their talents. Local currency Brixton Pound are hosting a Brand Fashion Challenge.

Brixton Windmill sails for Brixton Design TrailFor young families, Brixton Design Trail offers an Open Day at London’s only remaining inner city  Windmill, featuring a Woodcraft demonstration by local woodworkers.

Book into a workshop to make and design your own Brixton Chocolate Bar at the Chocolate Museum, create a pop up card powered by automata at Imagine. Think. Make.

Grow or take part in Day of the Piñata with piñatas designed by local artists including  Juan is Dead collaborating with Mexican restaurant Casa Morita.

Crafty Fox Market potsThe Crafty Fox market presents a Brixton Design Trail special two-day event this weekend at The Dogstar, with three stories of designer/makers hosting stalls and workshops.

In‐Habit showcases international craft and creative practice – from glass and ceramics to lighting and furniture, while Arches Brixton Creatives occupy a series of railway arches to present installations and performances by local designer/makers working in fashion, painting, upholstery and bespoke wallpaper.

Artist Jo Gibbs welcomes visitors to her workshop where she explores the re‐ use of lace to create bespoke objects with history and personal significance.

DISTRICT LATE NIGHT – BRIXTOPIA

Celebrate the launch of Brixtopia – a social experiment which challenges ideas about the international flow of people and money. St Matthew’s Peace Garden in central Brixton, featuring the Rebel Space project, will host with talks, food and music from some of the finest female DJs in town.
