Europe’s first memorial to African and Caribbean soldiers who lost their lives in the two world wars will be unveiled in Windrush Square, Brixton this morning.
The two Obelisks, which will list every regiment from Africa and the Caribbean who served in the wars, will form part of the remembrance ceremony outside the Black Cultural Archives from 10.30am.
The African and Caribbean War memorial was made possible by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and has cost in the region of £70,000. Each stone weighs more than 1.5tonnes.
