Independent Venue Week 2016 at Windmill Brixton: Misty Miller, Childhood, Warmduscher and more

One of our favourite local venues has again been chosen as an official venue for Independent Venue Week. Windmill Brixton has booked some big local names to mark this week-long celebration of independent music venues, which runs from 25 to 31 January 2016.

“We’re pleased once again to represent South London during Independent Venue Week,” says Windmill band booker Tim, “we’ve decided to focus on the huge amount of talent around here rather than trying to get in touring bands. Many of the acts playing during the week can pack out bigger venues these days so naturally we’re pleased to have them back where they started out!”

At a time when several well-known venues in London have been forced to close the Windmill still sails on and has curated a strong week of events without even having to look north of the river for talent.

The opening night party on Monday 25 Jan features some acts who play here pretty much all of the time with south London postpunkers Sleaze and the psych rock of Billy Prince Brown.

On Tuesday, neighbouring Brixton Hill Studios take over the venue and have Turner Prize winning artist Martin Creed playing with his full band. Although best known for his art, Martin has had albums out on esteemed indie label Moshi Moshi as well as his own telephone Records. In support are ex-Cardiacs keyboarc master William D Drake and the quirky Stephen Evens.

On Wednesday night, local girl Misty Miller is playing her first London gig of the year, with a full band. 2016 promises to be a big year for Misty with her much-anticipated second album due out on Relentless Records in February.

Thursday is very much the wildchild event of the week when Trashmouth Records (home of Fat White Family) bring the crushing electrocrash of Warmdsucher to the venue along with trumpet-touting postpunkers Meatraffle and all girl quartet Madonnatron.

South London dreamscapers Childhood play their first London headline show in a year on the Friday night, in the run-up to the release of their second album on Rough Trade Records. Local favourites Phobophobes support with post-rock-rap newcomers Ghost Kings Of The Five Regions opening. [SOLD OUT]

On Saturday the UK’s foremost americana music label Loose present a half-day jamboree headlined by homegrown country-soul sextet Danny & The Champions of the World, and the week ends on Sunday with some of the Windmill’s hotly-tipped bands for the future – Brixton-based indie-funk punkers Shame headline what should be jam-packed night with other local buzz bands Goat Girl, Dead Pretties and Monk.
