Call for Windrush Square Remembrance Sunday volunteers

Organisers of the Remembrance Sunday commemoration in Brixton’s Windrush Square this year – the first for a while when there will be just a single event on the square – are seeking volunteers to help it run smoothly.

Taking place from on Sunday 10 November from 2pm, the service will mark 110 years since the outbreak of the First World War and honour the African and Caribbean men and women, and all those who served, in both World Wars.

Organisers include the Nubian Jak Community Trust, the Black Cultural Archives, the West Indian Association of Service Personnel, The Friends of Windrush Square, and Lambeth Council.

Volunteers are needed to:

  • Assist with hosting and refreshments in Lambeth town hall
  • Give out programmes on Windrush Square
  • Steward and support guests on Windrush Square.

They will be provided with refreshments including biscuits, soft drinks, tea and coffee.

“This is a great opportunity to be a part of the annual Remembrance Sunday event for the community,” say the oragnisers.

“Volunteers will be contributing to fulfilling the community organisations’ aims to deliver an African and Caribbean Remembrance event at the Windrush Square African Caribbean War Memorial to venerate the sacrifice of service people and empower the community they serve.”

Volunteers, who mut be over 16, should be confident and presentable with good people skills. They will receive induction on site ahead of the service.

The volunteer shift runs from noon until 4pm. The event itself takes place from 1.50 to 3pm.

Applications from all backgrounds, abilities and social circumstances are welcome. Lambeth town hall and Windrush Square are both fully accessible.
