Volunteers boost Brockwell Park biodiversity

Volunteers are adding hundreds of plants to Brockwell Park’s new biodiversity area.

Friends of Brockwell Park and members of Lambeth council’s biodiversity team, hosted a volunteer planting day earlier this month.

The council won almost £37,000 grant funding from the Mayor of London for the Rewilding Brockwell project, improving biodiversity in a seven-hectare area in the North West (Brixton Hill) side of the park.

Mounds and hollows in this new area have been flowering all summer and are already slowing the flow of water to help prevent flooding, say the organisers.

The volunteers bedded in more than 1,300 plants, including many species chosen for both the dryer and wetter areas of the mounds.

Planting days are free and open to all. Recent volunteers were local residents of all ages from across the borough.

The next planting day is on Saturday 16 November, from 11am to 2pm. Whips – young trees – and shrubs will be planted to provide food and cover for insects and small animals.

All are welcome to join the planting (children six and over and under16s with an adult). Wear robust shoes and clothing. Gloves, tools, and plants will be provided. Bring your own food and drink.
