This year there is greater need than ever to commemorate and celebrate the arrival of the Empire Windrush and the people aboard. Those who came to the UK with determination and optimism, to build, their promised, bright new futures. The energy, passion and considerable skills played a key role in rebuilding Britain after WW2, specifically in the NHS and across our public services.
This year in the light of the COVID pandemic, those delivering unconditionally at the frontline in hospitals, on public transport and in the care service are dealing with the immense responsibilities of keeping people, hundreds of people, alive whilst they are also most at risk – this is the personal legacy of a generation of formidable people.
Sing in solidarity!
On Monday 22nd June at 10.27am everyone is asked to join in and Sing in Solidarity for the Windrush Generation.
Lambeth Council and The Brixton Project have created a unique version of the universally loved song ‘You Can Get It If You Really Want It’ by Jimmy Cliff and Desmond Dekker. A community version of the song has been made by Lambeth musicians and singers for the event. On Windrush Day, Monday 22nd June 2020 at 10:27am, we want you wherever you are to play, sing and dance along.
“We want all our residents to join in and create a moment of unity across Lambeth to acknowledge the Windrush Generation.”
– Cllr Sonia Winifred
Encourage your friends and neighbours to join you on your doorsteps (mindful of social distancing) to raise your singing voices in tribute! Tune in from 10:20am to Colourful Radio for the official countdown and broadcast.
On Friday 18 June, the backing track will also be made available on Love Lambeth.
Windrush Windows
Draw, paint or make with your family to help turn your street into a colourful celebration of the day.
The Brixton Project have worked with a local artist, Carolyne Hill, to create a celebratory Windrush Day Art Pack for everyone. Head to the dedicated Love Lambeth page to download now and start decorating your windows.
We want Windrush Windows to be visible throughout Lambeth in businesses and residential streets alike.
