Brixton Windmill has more to celebrate in its 200th anniversary year after being granted £360,000 for the construction of a purpose built education centre by Lambeth council.
The Friends of Windmill Garden (FoWG) run a successful education programme for children at local primary schools, but the building they use is shared and unsuitable for plans to expand the education programme into secondary schools.
They share the old One o’Clock Club building with Holmwood Nursery that also need to expand to remain viable.
The money will mean FoWG will have a new building designed as an education centre that will allow for community activities as well as running the education programme.
However, the grant and proposed building are subject to planning permission and a consultation process before being finally signed off.
Cllr Jack Hopkins, council cabinet member for regeneration, business and culture, said: “We believe this new project has the potential to build on the huge success of Brixton Windmill, and further benefit the borough.
“This is part of our strategy for investing money into community projects that will create an income stream for community activity into the future. “We have identified funding for construction, although the scheme is still subject to consultation and planning permission.”
