Seema Malhotra MP, the parliamentary under-secretary of state for migration and citizenship, will address the third annual Windrush National Vigil in Windrush Square on Sunday 6 April.
Windrush National Organisation, Justice for Windrush Generations, Black Cultural Archives, Friends of Windrush Square, Northampton Windrush Generation & Descendants, and The Nubian Jak Community Trust, are among the supporters.
Proceedings will be conducted by Bishop Dr. Desmond Jaddoo MBE, Chair of the Windrush National Organisation. This commemorates the seventh anniversary since the exposure of what has become known as the Windrush Scandal.
The vigil, from 1 to 2.30pm, will feature a keynote address by Seema Malhotra.
The Mayor of Lambeth will open the event, setting the stage for an afternoon of remembrance, reflection, and support for the Windrush community.
A special moment will be dedicated to giving thanks, remembering, honouring, and paying respects to the Windrush Generation, and ensuring that the victims who are no longer with us are not forgotten.
Following the vigil, the Home Office Windrush outreach team will hold a surgery at the Black Cultural Archives, providing direct assistance to those affected by the Windrush scandal.
“This important gathering aims to honour the contributions of the Windrush Generation and address ongoing challenges faced by many in the community. The event is open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend,” said the organisers.
