A trade union is predicting “Christmas chaos” on Lambeth streets as traffic wardens go on strike for two days.
GMB, a local government union, said its members employed by the parking outsourcing company Apcoa in Lambeth, Kingston, Richmond and Wandsworth will not be working on Monday 23 or Tuesday 24 December, “which will see little or no civil enforcement across the boroughs on the two days preceding Christmas”.
The pay dispute saw the wardens strike for a week in October.
“As we stated last time these members took action, they not only generate revenue for the boroughs, but also keep traffic moving and keep the streets clear,” said GMB regional organiser Alex Etches.
“Our members deserve a decent pay rise that reflects the difficult and sometimes dangerous job they do for the boroughs’ residents.
“Apcoa need to agree to meet us, agree to negotiate with us properly and perhaps we can avoid this sort of unnecessary disruption to residents and local businesses going forward.”
Lambeth council has urged the employer and union to reconvene talks via the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS).
