The Brixton Voices competition has announced the performers who will take part in its live-streamed final tomorrow (Thursday 20 May).
The project was created to celebrate the opening of a new recording facility, BRXTN Studios, in Brixton Market.
Its original opening plans were delayed by the pandemic.
Contestants from around Lambeth sent an audition to the studio team. Artists did not need any prior experience.
On 6 May a shortlist of 21 was announced, with a varied mix of performers who then performed a live audition.
The search for “south London’s next big musical talent” has now been narrowed down to:
@Officialninamarie
@jbxnu_
@Vocalsbymajesty
@justrichardcarter
@lorenzopryce_
@deecienn
The winner will get 50 free hours of recording time and industry mentorship.
The final will get going at 7pm with a set by DJ Rachael Anson, who is the rapper Stormzy’s sister, and is hosted by Harry Pinero in BRXTN Studios.
Finalists were offered a two-hour songwriting masterclass from Grammy nominated songwriter Ruth Anne Cunningham before the final.
Thursday’s winner will also be offered the opportunity to showcase their talent at Brixton Village’s Courtyard, as part of its summer entertainment programme.
Karl Lokko, creative lead at BRXTN Studios, said: “Almost everyone should be able to appreciate just how big a deal this is.
“Being awarded 50 hours in a state-of-the-art studio in itself is aspiration correlating with resources.
“The winner has entered a symmetry that could potentially change their lives forever.”
