One of the many Brixton establishments opening for outdoor business today (12 April) is the Effra Social.
It is under new management as one of 14 venues formerly owned by the Antic group – which still runs the Dogstar on Coldharbour Lane and many others – taken over by West London based Portobello Brewing.
Effra Social’s outdoor space, renovated at a cost of about £150,000, will enable socially distanced drinking and dining.
Originally the Brixton Conservative Club, the Effra Social’s building is almost 100 years old.
“Following a £150k investment in the outside area we shall be reopening on 12 April with a new lease of life,” Portobello said.
“An exciting new chapter for this historic building, reputed to be an occasional haunt of Winston Churchill, the investment will put a much loved institution well and truly back on the Brixton map.
“The large suntrap garden on Effra Road will be unrecognisable following its full facelift.
“The covered garden will be heated, lit and designed to make this a destination all year round.”
From 11am Effra Social will serve brunch, including smashed avocado on sourdough with poached eggs.
“A new menu will accompany the development with fresh, seasonal British pub classics, and an emphasis on small plates and sharers with big flavours,” said Portobello.
“Proud to be local, we shall be promoting independent brewers such as Belleville, London Beer Lab, Mondo and many more, as well as beers from our neighbours at Brixton Brewery.
“These will accompany craft lagers Notting Helles and London Pilsner from Portobello Brewery.
Portobello said a new entertainment partnership will be announced shortly for events in the back room.
“We are delighted that we have been able to keep the core of our team together at the Effra, but will also be recruiting a few fresh faces as we get busier, helping to add employment for more local people,” the brewery said.
