Brixton’s already fraught traffic is set to get worse as “safety-critical” gas main repairs close Coldharbour Lane from Brixton Road to Atlantic Road next Tuesday (9 March) for at least five weeks.
A robotic system – CISBOT – will be used to repair three large diameter mains.
Work on a dangerous platform at Brixton station is still affecting Atlantic Road itself.
Gas company SGN said the work is essential to ensure that that local community continues to receive a “safe and reliable” gas supply.
It said it had had “close consultations” with Lambeth council and Transport for London.
Electricity supplier UK Power Networks will carry out work in the area at the same time to prevent further traffic disruption at a later date.
Access for residents will be available.
SGN said extra safety precautions will be in place to protect its staff and members of the public from catching or spreading the virus.
