Anti-racist campaigners gathered in Brixton’s Windrush Square today (20 March) as part of an international day of action to mark United Nations anti-racism day.
The socially distanced event brought together Stand Up To Racism groups from across South London with representatives from Lambeth trade unions including Unison, the National Education Union and Unite.
The UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March, the day the police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid pass laws in 1960.
There is a memorial for the massacre in Windrush Square.
