A shop selling inclusive books for children has opened in Brixton Village after raising nearly £50,000 with a crowdfunding campaign.
Round Table Books’ permanent shop follows the success of a pop-up in Brixton last year that stocked only inclusive titles.
#ReadTheOnePercent. the campaign’s title, was a reference to a report by the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education that found only 1% of more than 9,000 children’s books published in the UK in 2017 had a BAME main character.
Khadija Osman (above) joins the bookshop from the Forbidden Planet London megastore and will work with Moon Lane Ink, a community company, to run the store.
Khadija said: “I am extremely proud to be bringing more inclusion and opportunity to the community with Round Table Books.
“I hope Brixton is excited to have us as a permanent fixture because I’m beyond excited to be a new part of their literary line-up.”
The official launch is on Friday 7 June and the weekend of 8-9 June will see family fun time at the shop with face painting and balloons.
