Brixton’s Courtesan on Atlantic Road is launching a series of Tuesday night female comedy events that will feature Edinburgh festival fringe previews by top local performers, including Jenny Collier, Laura Lexx and Sally-Anne Hayward.
Rising stars Maisie Adam and Sarah Keyworth start things off this Tuesday (19 June).
Maisie Adam decided to try stand-up comedy just 18 months ago. Within a year, she became the fourth woman winner in the 30-year history of So You Think You’re Funny – the biggest stand-up comedy newcomer competition at the Edinburgh Fringe. Maisie relays her experiences of navigating the recklessness of youth while dealing with a medical condition that requires you to be a Sensible Susan.
Sarah Keyworth has appeared on Comedy Central and the BBC. Now, see her debut hour, Dark Horse. She recollects an important little girl and her battle against every expectation of what being a girl means.
The all-women series is in keeping with Courtesan’s unique female-first policy. It boasts the world’s first female-produced-only wine and spirit list.
It plans to expand live entertainment, highlighting female comedians, musicians and performers, while continuing to serve its the innovative dim sum, high quality cocktails, exotic teas and a “storytelling” aesthetic inspired by the legendary courtesans of ancient China.
All Courtesan dim sum is made in-house, with a focus on pure, MSG-free ingredients and an extensive offering of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.
