Love Your Local Market – a week-long festival celebrating Brixton’s markets – starts today
Friday 26 May. It’s part of a nationwide campaign and Brixton is competing to be number one.
Local dignitaries, politicians and celebrities kicked things off with a “VIP breakfast” on Friday – rubbing shoulders with shoppers and traders. In true Brixton-style pupils from Archbishop Sumner provided the music on the steel pans.
Family-friendly fun for the festival includes live entertainment from around the world, face painting and guided heritage tours as well as discounts and giveaways in all five markets (Electric Avenue, Popes Road, Brixton Station Road, Brixton Village and Market Row).
Organisers hope the campaign will reignite Brixton’s market culture and encourage young and aspiring entrepreneurs to work alongside Brixton’s veteran traders.
