Lambeth council is appealing to residents to report fly-tipping as a fly-tipper who dumped a van-load of old furniture in Styles Gardens, Loughborough Junction, faces having his vehicle crushed.
Lambeth council said Mohammed Nadeem is the latest in a long line of offenders who have been prosecuted for fly-tipping after council enforcement officers pursued convictions against them.
Four previous cases brought by Lambeth council against fly-tippers this year resulted in driving disqualifications, thousands of pounds worth of fines and referrals to the Environment Agency to revoke individuals’ waste carrying licences.
Nadeem was caught on CCTV in February and council officers traced him by identifying the van he used for fly-tipping.
He pleaded guilty at Camberwell Green Magistrates Court and was fined £440. Last week a judge accepted a council application to have his vehicle taken away from him, subject to appeal.
Cllr Jennifer Brathwaite, council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “Fly-tipping is completely unacceptable and we will use every power we have to find those responsible and bring them to justice.
“It is a crime that blights our environment, offends our residents and costs us a great deal of money to clear up.
“Fines and prosecutions can be effective is deterring offenders, but taking away the vehicles they use to carry out fly-tipping actually prevents them from reoffending.
“We need residents to help us catch more of these criminals – as this case shows, sometimes just a number plate can result in a prosecution.”
Residents can report fly-tipping and provide information about offenders using the council’s online reporting form.
