Your guide to what’s happening in Brixton this week.
Tuesday 22 March: The Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham branches of the Women’s Equality Party are holding a joint event celebrating women of South London at the CLF Arts Cafe in Peckham. It’s an opportunity to meet local GLA candidates (including Kate Massey-Chase, who lives in Streatham), remember and rejoice in amazing women, both past and present, and mingle with some great organisations, including the women who ran the recent Great Women of Brixton project. Free. 7pm to 9.30pm.
Tuesday 22: Tommy McArdle hosts one of the most popular quizzes in Brixton at the Effra Social, with a cash prize for first place and booby prizes for second and second to last place. £5 per team. Starts 8pm.
Wednesday 23: A collection of work from over 20 British designers, artists and makers will be for sale in a silent auction on 23 March at The Turpentine in Brixton. All the proceeds from the evening will go to Oxfam. Come for art, food and drink, all for a fantastic causes. There will be prints, unique jewellery, accessories and homeware up for auction, all designed and made in the UK by small businesses. 7pm to 9pm.
Wednesday: Stax Dempsey presents a night of American blues and rock’n’roll at the Hootananny with The Red 8 and Raleigh Rye. Free. 9pm to midnight.
Friday 25: Celebrate the four-day Easter weekend at Clarkshaws Brewery’s Easter Party, with a selection of live music on Friday afternoon from local acts the Travelling Sisters and Jack Lewis. Saturday night sees the return of the popular DJ AuxOut to Clarkshaws’ residency at the Platform, who will be playing the best funk, disco, old school and groovy beats. To finish, we’ll be bringing back our popular Beer & Boardgames session on Monday afternoon. First come first served! Bring your own game or borrow one of ours. Games available include everything from family favourites like Monopoly and Go For Broke, modern classics such as Carcassone and Pandemic, to advanced cult games including Seven Wonders and Game of Thrones. Throughout the weekend, Clarkshaws’ full range of beers will be on tap, including our new Easter special: Bunny Hop Extra Pale Ale, alongside wine, cider and soft drinks. Free. 2pm to 11pm.
Saturday 26: Make Do and Mend will be returning to the Pop Box at Pop Brixton for an even bigger and better vintage and makers market from 10am-4.30pm. Makers, sellers and traders will be selling everything from vintage fashion, homewares, prints, handmade gifts, accessories and arts and crafts. The site will still be covered so, even if its a wet easter weekend come along. Make Do and Mend’s DJ will be returning to spin some vintage tunes on the decks, and the bar will be open. It’s going to be a great family friendly day out at Pop Brixton for the Easter Weekend.
Saturday 26: Saturday nights at Phonox are run by permanent resident DJ Jasper James plus secret guests. £5 to £10. DJ starts 10pm, closes 4am.
Sunday 27: Global Rhythms will be taking over Brixton this Easter Sunday for their first-ever day and night event. Pop Brixton is their base for the afternoon, with a stunning array of live performances and DJ sets spanning house, funk afrobeat and jazz playing out across the whole site; before the party moves on to Electric Brixton. £5 to £12.50. 10pm to 6am.
