There’s been such bad news about independent businesses on Atlantic Road recently with the loss of Kaff and the A&C Deli that you’d think you wouldn’t be surprised to hear of another business close. However another Brixton loss with the closure of Tidy Hair is still a shock.
Owner Sean O’Sullivan battled back from a life-threatening accident last year with the support of the local community only to be thwarted by increasing rents and drawn out negotiations over the lease.
He’s taken the decision to close the business after nearly 7 years of trading to concentrate on his health. He’ll still be cutting hair at the new Granville Market Space on Saturdays and Sundays so if you’re panicking about losing your hairdresser, pop by to make an appointment.
It’s sad to lose another small business that helped make the area popular when it was less well known. The irony is that rising rents and costs are returning Atlantic Road to being as full of empty shops as it was 7 or 8 years ago but making it harder for local traders to take risks and open successful businesses.
Gutted that Tidy has gone. Just went to Barber Of Seville on Coldharbour and got a haircut from a chav who cut it really really short even though I asked for ‘not much off, just a tidy up’. Annoyed, Tidy was great.
