Lambeth Council is proposing to sell the Minet Library, home of the Lambeth Archives.

The council hopes to use the money from the sale of Minet Library on Knatchbull Road, and also Waterloo Library in Lower Marsh, to create a £10 million fund for culture and library services in the borough.

Cllr Jane Edbrooke, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “Libraries are essential safe spaces for everyone. We are committed to that but we have to face the reality of these drastic cuts to our budget….Selling Minet and Waterloo libraries will give us a pot of money to support community libraries so this is an opportunity to be bold with ideas whether that’s going digital or sharing space to generate income.”

A consultation has been launched to allow residents to give their feedback on the proposals. Residents can give feedback online or pick up a paper questionnaire at any Lambeth library from February 12. The deadline for feedback is April 24.

Minet Hub, a charity made up of local community hubs, is holding a candle lit vigil in support of the library from 5pm to 6pm in Myatt’s Field’s Park on February 7. See details below.
