Night of local music with Laid Bare Presents

Last night local musicians took over Brixton East, playing a series of intimate sets for Laid Bare Presents, curated by Rami Radi.

Local music lovers were treated to an eclectic and well-curated selection of South London’s best upcoming musicians on Thursday night. Perched on a stool with her ukelele, Bee Anchor was one of the first acts. She played a compelling set that had the audience spellbound, finishing with a haunting acapella version of Billie Holiday’s ‘Gloomy Sunday’.

She was followed by Nouria Bah, who I haven’t been able to stop listening to since. With a friend on percussion, Nouria sang in harmony with herself, recording and looping with a pedal. Check her out on Soundcloud.

Next up was Midnight Choir, whose quirky songs were tinged with dark humour – imagine a more melodic acoustic-y version of Scroobius Pip. They got extra points for singing about Clement Atlee.

Headlining after this was Ben Romans-Hopcroft, lead singer of Brixton band Childhood whose debut album has been met with universal acclaim and seen them tour Europe with the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club and Johnny Marr. Last night was only his second solo performance. Starting with Childhood favourite ‘Right Beneath Me’, he followed it up with a couple of previously unheard tracks. “Not even the band have heard these,” he told the audience. Something to look out for on the next album perhaps?

Solsine followed, ramping up the vibes with a some pumping house and a range of very talented vocalists. Check out the interview we did with them.

All in all, a great night for only a fiver. Brilliant to see the best of local music brought together under one roof. We await the next instalment with much anticipation!
