Brixton Market bar owner to raise thousands for Bliss UK

A local bar owner is preparing to run the London Marathon to raise money for premature baby charity, Bliss UK.

Jonathan Rushton, 28, is the owner of Seven at Brixton, a tapas and cocktail bar on Market Row, Brixton.

Having previously completed the Manchester Marathon, he is now training for the London run on April 13.

“I’m better prepared than last year,” Mr Rushton said. “This week I’ll be running the first 19 miles of the route. With the Manchester Marathon, I didn’t know the course itself, whereas I can just drive to Greenwich and practice.”

Mr Rushton is aiming to raise £2,500 for Bliss UK, which offers support for families and specialist training needed for medical staff, as well as research into the causes of premature birth. It’s a charity which he believes is of great importance:

“It’s not just about medicine and incubators: it’s very reactive, providing family counsellors and support. It’s important to help families who deal with these issues.”

In the weeks leading up to the marathon, contributions from food sales at Seven will be given to help Mr Rushton reach his fundraising goal: “For one or two weeks, we’re going to donate £1 from every food dish, and customers will have the option to add a £1 donation onto their bill.

“We raised £800 from the bar last year, so we’re hopeful for similar results this year.”

Mr Rushton is planning to take part in another marathon next year, with the possibility of going abroad. “There’s no better way to see a city. But there are lots of things to consider: travel, accommodation and climate are all concerns.

“Although I’d like to do go abroad, this isn’t about me: what I’m doing has to be about the charity, and it’s important not to forget that.”
