Secret Brixton: Binki Taylor

Binki Taylor

Binki Taylor, co owner of Circus and proprietor of Snugg, both in Brixton Village tells us about her Secret Brixton. She explains that there are obvious places to love in Brixton, but for her it’s about the right moment in the right place.

Block 336 (336 Brixton Road) feels like the kind of gallery space you imagine. A huge underground cemented basement space with a variety of studios and meeting space, this newcomer to the Brixton gallery scene is the place for brilliant new modern art. Not only is the curation and display interesting, they host great opening nights and combine art and parties with style.

Perfect for the recent hot weather is a 6pm glass of wine on the roof at The Lambeth. Particularly good mid week, this venue isn’t just for dancing your socks off. Enjoy the views of Brixton from above. You’ll see it afresh.

If your night turns out to be a big one, you’ll need to eat on the way home and it has to be Bickles (423 Coldharbour Lane). Open til the wee small hours, the food is delicious, the staff endlessly patient and the atmosphere great.

You’ll need to keep your outfits perfect to seen in Brixton and the only place to go is Tumbles Launderette (Railton Road.) Impeccable service from Bravo and Shantelle sees buttons individually wrapped for dry cleaning, laundry walked back to your house and detailed clothes care. Coming here is part of my routine and connects me to the area. They always wave when I pass and make me feel welcome.

No matter what you didn’t think you needed, but wanted, you can get it at Pound Plus on Pope’s Road. For plastic flowers, plant pots and suitcases, they are the place to come. Go in and explore and see what you come out with. Don’t forget to take in the whole block. You can get surprising bargains on anything from bedlinen, branded shoes and fruit and veg here.
