Brixton residents to have their say on £6m streets revamp

REVAMP: Residents will have their say on how the oney is spent to improve our streets

Brixton residents will have their say on how £6million is spent on improvements to streets in the town.

As part of a three week consultation, north Brixton and Stockwell are being consulted on the works. People have been invited to a workshop at the Karibu Centre, Gresham Road, today from 4pm until 8pm.

A second consultation meeting will take place on Saturday, between midday and 4pm, at the Lambeth Accord, Brixton Road.

Suggested improvements to streets in North Brixton and Stockwell include new measures for tightening up road safety standards and the quality of the local environment, such as widening pavements, cyclehire schemes, more shrubs and tree planting, the introduction of one way streets and 20mph zones in certain areas to help tackle speeding vehicles and make travel easier and safer for cyclists and pedestrians in the borough.

The Neighbourhood Enhancement Programme (NEP) consultation for the North Brixton and Stockwell areas closes on December 7.  Construction work is expected to start in January.

Councillor Pete Robbins, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services said: “We have already been working with many residents to get ideas about what they’d like us to spend money on this year.  Now we want all interested residents to tell us which of their proposals they’d like us to put into action.

“I’d urge everyone in North Brixton and Stockwell to go on the council’s website, take a look at the proposals and give us their response by 7 December.”

  1. What a waste of money – 6million, how many Police of PCSO’s could that buy? These would have a much better effect on the streets in these areas. No doubt most of the money will actually be spent on yet another consulatation process, ie jobs for the boys ( and girls).
