Parents have launched a petition for a pedestrian crossing on their children’s walk to school.

The families say it is unacceptable there is no way they can safely cross Brixton Water Lane – a busy road linking Herne Hill and Brixton.

Most of the families live in the area around St Matthews Road in Brixton and are forced to risk Water Lane to reach Jubilee School on Tulse Hill road.

The council has said pedestrian improvements, which cost at least £60,000, are hard to justify without a record of accidents.

The campaigners point out however that Water Lane has become something of a rat-run. On each of the past two weekends cars have left the road and smashed into neighbouring walls.

Tsedal Powell, who lives on St Matthew’s Road and has two children
at Jubilee School, is backing the campaign.

She said: “This is not just about safety, it’s about making it easier to get across what is a busy road.

“There must be 100 children a day who have to chance a crossing. It’s the elderly and disabled who are being put at a disadvantage too.”

She added: “The recent crashes show just how fast people drive along Water Lane.”

The families behind the petition plan to present it to councillors by the end of the month.

Lambeth council failed to reply to a request for comment.

  1. Thanks for the marvelous posting! I quite enjoyed reading it, you
could be a great author.I will make sure to bookmark your blog and will eventually come back in the foreseeable future.
I want to encourage you to definitely continue your great writing, have a nice holiday weekend!

  2. The same unacceptable response comes from Lambeth when I’ve complained about speeding traffic elsewhere in the borough. Seemingly until someone is killed no-one is prepared to do anything, however unpleasant and dangerous it is for the people who live and use the streets.
