A Brixton-based bookworm has set up an intriguing literary treasure hunt as part of World Book Night.
Eve Roberts has hidden 25 free copies of Small Island, by Andrea Levy, at venues around Brixton and Herne Hill and will be tweeting clues from today to help people go out and find them.
In a bid to promote literacy, 1million of the nation’s favourite adult books will be given out from tonight, as part of World Book Night. The 25 titles were voted for and specially printed for the event, to be given out by local people in their community.
Ms Roberts said: “Some of the best books I’ve ever read have been recommendations from other people, and in that vain, I’ll be doing the same for 25 strangers around Brixton and Herne Hill.
“In a bid to promote literacy 1million of the nation’s favaourite adult books will be given out from tonight, as part of World Book Night. A little piece of the action is coming to our neighbourhood! I will be placing copies of Andrea Levy’s brilliant Small Island around a variety of Brixton and Herne Hill institutions, think local cafes, pubs, book shops and libraries!”
She added: “Once you’ve read it, share the love and pass it on! The books each have an individual code, allowing future readers to register the book, to allow us to see how far it travels!”
Brixton Blog will be tweeting clues to the books’ hiding places from today, and the hunt will last until the very last book is taken. Once you work out the location, just ask the staff for a copy of the book, and keep your fingers crossed that you got there first.
