A Herne Hill pub is supporting the Blog’s campaign to reinstate the Lambeth Country Show this year.
Jo Lloyd-Rogers, manager of The Florence pub, Dulwich Road, says that it is by far the bar’s biggest weekend of the year. It had been scheduled to take place on 21 and 22 July.
Bar staff had been looking forward to this year’s event, after heavy showers last year kept many punters away.
Lloyd-Rogers told the Blog: “I remember when I started working here everyone was talking about the Country Show weekend, and how much fun it would be.
“It is something everybody looks forward to throughout the year, and brings the community together. It’s such an important date.”
She added: “I really hope that people will sign the petition and we really hope it gets a lot of support.”
Council bosses have blamed the Olympic Games, which start on 27 July, for making holding the fair a “significant security risk” as portaloos and police are diverted to Stratford.
Lloyd Rogers said: “The Olympics will be great, but it would be a shame to lose something for the local community because of it.”
Yesterday cllr Florence Nosegbe said that a “scaled down” Country Show-style could go ahead in Brockwell Park this year, after Lib Dem leader cllr Ashley Lumsden called for the decision to cancel it to be reviewed.
If Brixton Blog’s petition reaches 3,000 signatures then it will be presented it to a full meeting of Brixton councillors to trigger a debate in the chamber.
