This Saturday is set to see the launch of artist and award winning author Akwaeke Emzi’s new novel: ‘You made a Fool of Death with your Beauty’. Emezi, who last year featured on the cover of TIME magazine’s ‘Next Generation Leaders’ is a Nigerian born multi-disciplinarian artist and writer who has been nominated for countless awards for their writing which, like their practice; is deeply rooted in the metaphysics of Black Spirit.
Emzi began writing in childhood, using storytelling as a device to escape the dangerous reality of their childhood in Nigeria. Moving to America when they were 16, Emzi’s debut novel ‘Freshwater’ was nominated for a multitude of awards and was an instant New York Times bestseller. Their following work continued to be received with equal admiration from critics and readers and their short stories and video art have received many awards including the Commonwealth Short Story Prize for Africa. They have been published in Dazed, Granta and Vogue amongst others. Their latest novel ‘You made a Fool of Death with your Beauty’ is a romance which has been declared by many the must-read book of summer with Amazon Studios being awarded the rights to for a feature film, in what is suspected to be the biggest book deal of the year so far.
The book launch event this Saturday, hosted by Faber and Dark Matter in partnership with Brixton Village and Round Table books, is un-ticketed and open to all. It will feature manicures and nail art, a curated selection of romance novels by Black writers, spoken word performances and DJ sets amongst other activities and in keeping with the book it is set to celebrate. Just look for the hot pink unit in the village. More information on this event can be found via the link below.
