Whirled had to postpone its reopening because of Covid issues.
It will now re-open on Monday 6 September.
The full programme will be available from the Whirled website from Monday 23 August.
Loughborough Junction’s Whirled cinema club will re-open its doors on 26 July to launch a slate of top films.
The sudden passing of Menelik Shabazz, visionary British film-maker and founder of the BFM festival – the leading and longest running platform for Black world cinema in the UK – will be marked by a showing of his 80s classic Burning An Illusion on 5 August.
It will be followed by a question-and-answer session on the impact of his work and the legacy of the BFM festival.
First up after re-opening on 26 July will be the multi-award winning Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand giving an Oscar-winning performance as a van-dwelling nomad, who gives up small town life for life on the road after the death of her husband.
Following that will be Judas and the Black Messiah, featuring English actor Daniel Kaluuya giving an Oscar-winning performance as assassinated Black Panther leader Fred Hampton.
The Whirled Cinema website has full details of its July and August films, which range from Disney’s Dumbo, to The Act of Killing, a chilling documentary-plus about right-wing death squad members in Indonesia, executive produced by Werner Herzog.
As an infection control measure and in line with its streamlining of payment systems, Whirled has stopped cash transactions.
The cinema has also changed its seating and is asking members for their opinions.
It says the lockdown has given it time to reflect on how to better engage the local community.
It is going to expand the range of movies it shows and align its films with notable dates like International Women’s Month, Black History Month and Pride Month.
Whirled will also show films which spotlight Latin American, African and Caribbean cinema.
Responding to members’ requests, Sunday screenings will move from 6 to 5pm. The cinema says this will allow to fit in more screenings of popular films and host more events for members.
