The Lockdown Collection at The Department Store

Man Eating byBram Winterford

Local event space Downstairs at The Department Store is calling amateur artists in Brixton to submit works for a community art exhibition entitled The Lockdown Collection. Funds raised will be donated to the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, set up to inspire and enable young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to succeed in their chosen career, and to work to create a fairer society.

Artworks must have been created during isolation, quarantine or lockdown, and prizes will be given in three categories of best overall, most innovative and most uplifting works.

Hannah Stubbs, Head of Events at The Department Store said “Lockdown has unleashed a wave of creativity through our community, with many amateur artists finding time to invest in creative pursuits. We’d like to celebrate these inspiring works by creating an opportunity for people in Brixton to present their work alongside each other and share their experiences of lockdown. Creativity comes in many forms – drawing, painting, photography, collage, ceramics, embroidery, sculpture and more. We’d like to encourage everyone to have fun embracing their inner artist in whatever way that might be.”

Launching later this year when lockdown restrictions allow, the exhibition will be free to attend with voluntary contributions being donated to the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust. Hosted by architects and designers Squire & Partners, works will be selected with guest judge Annie
Harris, former Head of Education for the Royal Academy of Arts.

The deadline for submission is 31 August.
