Summer may be cooling off but there’s no need to stay in this September: the Lambeth Heritage Festival is back, bringing plenty of free and fun talks, walks, events and workshops to Brixton. Last year the festival put on almost 50 events which were attended by 1486 people during the month and this year the organisers are hoping to attract even more people from the community to explore many different aspects of Lambeth’s heritage.
You can download the full programme of events, which are taking place throughout the borough here, but we’ve picked out the top five Brixton-based happenings for you to get in your diary right now. Look out for our top picks of events happening further afield coming later this week.

Bring your smart phone along, and a bit of imagination too, and prepare to see Loughborough Junction as you have never seen it before. This app has been developed by the Loughborough Junction Action Group and will allow you to follow fictional and real stories from the local area between 1914 and 1918 as you walk around. Watch out for our feature on this in the September edition of The Brixton Bugle.
3. The Island of Brixton Walk
Saturday 13th September, 11am
Meet outside the Black Cultural Archives
London Blue Badge Guide and cultural researcher Kelly Foster will lead a walk around Brixton’s Windrush Square, telling the forgotten stories of the men and women who made Brixton their new home. Look out for our interview with Kelly, talking about how she researched the walk, in the next Brixton Bugle.
4. South London Sends you Mad
Tuesday 23rd September, 2pm
Meet outside the Carngie Library
Join Jon Newman of Lambeth Archives for a tour of Herne Hill, the area where John Ruskin spent almost all of his life, and which ultimately drove him to the edge of sanity. A date for the diary for anyone interested in the Victorian era and its feelings towards madness.
Saturday 27 September, all day
Lambeth Archives, Minet Library, Knatchbull Road
There’s a lot crammed into this day and it’s all free. Find out more about what actually happens at the Lambeth Archives, look at the exhibition about Lambeth during the First World War or listen to talks from local histroians and writers. We’re especially looking forward to Stephen Bourne’s talk about his latest book Black Poppies, which is happening at 10.45am.
