Hello fellow Brixton residents & music enthusiasts!

We have recovered from our trip to Womex and our 3rd residency gig at The Windmill. Womex is a world music conference and because it was in Cardiff this year we went. We stayed in a camper van because the rugby was on and everything was booked. We watched some brilliant live acts. Our highlights were Cumbia All Stars who play Peruvian Chicha music. We loved the rhythms and  performance, the Hawaiian shirts, and the front man shaking his bottom. We also loved Krismenn and Alem who are beat boxers from Bretagne and who created a really cool party whilst looking like they were really proud of themselves.

Once back in Windmill mode we turned our hand to fancy dress for our Halloween special. The night was a huge success with over 100 people trudging up the hill on a Thursday to join in the scary fun! Joelle Taylor’s poetry was so relevant and performed with a power that silenced the room. Wendy Solomon wowed audiences with her scary songs about killing the family pet of a man she had had an affair with. This was followed by Bird Radio’s performance of one of my favourites, ‘Who Killed Cock Robin’, with flute looping storytelling. I think I speak on behalf of the whole band when I say the winner of best Poeticat costume was Ziggi, with her crow outfit. Our response song, put together using audience members’ answers to ‘what’s the scariest thing in the world’, was set to A Nightmare Before Christmas’ ‘This is Halloween’ and included lines such as ‘penises and machetes’ and ‘The Tory Cabinet’, so thank you all for those. This is was all made complete by our headliners Le Juki who drew eyes on their eyes playing my favourite ‘Forest of Stick Insects’.

Our next Windmill Residency is December 28th and for our next response song we’re asking you ‘what is the naughtiest thing you’ve ever done?’ Tweet your answers to @Poeticat with #PoeticatRes then come and see them performed onstage.

Over & out for now.
