The Advocacy Academy’s new HQ in Brixton Rec on Beehive Place will tonight (2 November) host a sold-out film screening to raise awareness of the disaster being inflicted on Palestine and Lebanon and funds for the victims.

It is organised by Film Lab Palestine and Lambeth Mutual Aid, which during lockdown launched a solidarity fund providing small grants of up to £50 to people living in the borough, so far totalling many thousands of pounds. It is currently closed.

It is organised by 10 local people, collaborating as a community with the input of people who receive money from the fund.

The screening is part of the Palestine Cinema Days Around The World project and takes place on the anniversary of the 1917 Balfour Declaration in which the British government supported the idea of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine, which at the time was ruled by the Turkish Ottoman Empire.

On show are Resistance, Why (1971) directed by Christian Ghazi, and Naila and The Uprising (2017) directed by Julia Bacha. They portray different forms of resistance and the history of Palestinian anti-colonial action.

Herne Hill’s Bunhead Bakery provided sweet treats with Palestinian flavours.

Lambeth Mutual Aid meets on the second Sunday of the month between1 nd 5pm at the Platform Cafe in Loughborough Junction to share drinks, food, stories and support.
