Brixton Windmill, celebrating 200 years and National Mills Weekend, got new sailcloths today (14 May). They are designed and printed by local design company Eley Kishimoto, creative ambassador for Brixton Windmill’s bicentenary year and part of the Brixton Design Trail team.
Millwright Paul Selwood took to a cherry-picker to fix the cloths. But apart from a quarter-turn in a sudden gust, the wind had not been strong enough to turn the sails by around midday.
Full tours of the Windmill today are sold out, but short tours of the first floor of the mill, with an opportunity to learn about the history and workings of the Windmill, are free and available from 1.00-4.30pm on a first-come-first-served basis.
The sails turned a few times during the day for those lucky enough to be there at the right time. For those that weren’t, there are some clips on Flickr (link via brixtonwindmill.org)
Very interesting and well illustrated piece, Thank You
