Local art gallery Knight Webb is to hold a solo survey exhibition of one of Brixton’s most celebrated contemporary artists, the sculptor Lesley Hilling. Lesley uses only recycled materials and found objects to create large wooden sculptures that can take up to a year to complete. Her intricate towers contain objects from her own life, including seagull eggs, crustacea shells, dominoes, pocket watches, photographs of Lesley’s family and valves from an old radio.
“I like to make something new out of objects that had a different life before,” says Lesley, whose work was displayed with other artists’ in Knight Webb last April. “My aim is to create a unified whole that is at once sculptural in it’s three dimensional form and painterly as each piece of wood I use is selected for it’s colour, texture and tonal quality.”
Under the Sign on the Hourglass II opens with a private viewing on 6th March at 6pm and continues for the public until 5th April. Search ‘Knight Webb’ in the box on the right to find out more about previous exhibitions at our discerning local art space on Atlantic Road.
