The effects of a “Poonami” in Stockwell last night were being felt in Brixton this morning as road closures in Clapham Road left redirected traffic at a standstill.
Clapham Road was submerged in inches of waste water last night after a water main burst at about 8pm. Firefighters and police were sent to the scene to evacuate some residents, and the road has been closed since.
The unfortunate inundation has been called ‘Poonami’ on Twitter, with dozens of pictures of the stinky water flooding social media sites.
A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “We received a call reporting flooding in the area. Four fire engines are on the scene and Thames Water are on the way to try and fix the problem. It is very much an ongoing incident.”
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “There is flooding on Clapham Road between Oval and Stockwell stations, which has been caused by a suspected burst water pipe.”
“We are asking people to avoid the area.”
Stockwell Tube is not affected.
