“Endz” new work by Jez Jacobs

“Endz” is Jez Jacobs’ new show in the cafe of Clapham’s Omnibus Theatre. His work invites you in with what at first sight are playful cutout figures, forms and colours. Each piece follows a similar pattern. Four figures outline a background of shapes and lines with some gentle pastel shading.

But you need to look more closely. You’ll see what look suspiciously like targets on each figure and plenty of what appear to be bullet holes. These are just like the sheets used in those shooting range scenes so common to action movies. And they suggest a much more troubling vision – in particular of street and youth culture. Each figure becomes a window on the complex world of young people – an interplay of references and symbols, iconic objects, energy, hopes and dreams, and shadowy forms of danger.

common ground by Jez Jacobs

Jez studied fine art and sculpture at London’s Central Saint Martin and has a background in graphic and multi-media design and working with young people – particularly those who might have been marginalised by the education system. His work reflects these very different strands in his life. In his own words “I’m interested in product design and youth culture”.

Each piece tells a story of contemporary urban life. Jez describes them as “orchestrated elements and images into a series of visual compositions inviting the viewer to explore, navigate and decipher”.

“Endz” runs until 31 March in the Omnibus Theatre, 1 Clapham Common Northside, SW4 0QW

It’s well worth a few minutes of your time.
