A pheasant was spotted last week enjoying a quiet stroll through the Rosendale allotments, much to the surprise and delight of local gardeners.
The bird was seen wandering among the 485 plots up on Rosendale Road – a rather unexpected sight in this part of South London. While pheasants are a common sight in the countryside, they are certainly not regulars in this urban corner of the capital.
Photos and videos of the surprise visitor were quickly shared in a local community group chat, where allotment holders reacted with curiosity and excitement. While many were eager to catch a glimpse, the general advice was to leave the bird undisturbed and let it move on in its own time.
Interestingly, despite their striking appearance, pheasants are not a protected species under UK law – something that surprised several residents who assumed the bird would be afforded more official protection.
For now, the pheasant’s visit remains a charming and unexpected moment in the life of the Rosendale allotments – and a welcome reminder of the wildlife still managing to find its way into the city.
