Brixton Immortals domino club are marking the coming of summer and with it Windrush day in June and Jamaica Labour Day in May.
Sunday 25 May will see the Immortals and the Brixton Soup Kitchen present a family-friendly fundraising celebration cook-off between the two organisations in their shared HQ on Coldharbour Lane.
On Saturday 21 June, the Immortals will mark the next day’s Windrush Day with youth and senior domino tournaments in Brixton library, plus music, food and fun from a variety of sources.
Clayton ‘Milo’ Myles and Red Peas will represent the Immortals and Fattys and Fybar Flavour Bros the Soup Kitchen in the cook-off.
Labour Day in Jamaica is celebrated annually on or around 23 May. It is a public holiday when people traditionally take part in community improvement projects.
The date has a double significance. It celebrates a workers’ rebellion in 1938 that was led by Alexander Bustamante and won improved rights for workers. It also began the drive for independence from Britain and Bustamante went on to become Jamaica’s first prime minister.
The holiday also replaced colonial Empire Day celebrations – a move suggested shorty before independence in 1962 by then chief minister Norman Manley.
The Immortals and Soup Kitchen will celebrate with their cook-off showdown and complimentary food.
