A new association for traders in Brixton Village and Market Row was launched today (26 June).

It has the goal of unifying traders across Brixton’s Markets. Traders met to formally launch the association and to elect a chair and an executive committee to lead the new community group.

The Brixton Village and Market Row Traders Association plans to raise awareness of issues in the markets, organise events, provide information on local decisions and opportunities, and share ideas about the challenges of running a business, in a supportive network.

“For too long, traders have been in competition with each other, and in competition to make our businesses go around,” association co-chair Kat Miles of Rachel & Malika’s said.

“In reality, the only way we can survive the challenging environment of the cost-of-living crisis is if we all to work together.

“The only way the market can rise from the slump it is in is if we all work together, listen to each other, and speak as one.

“I am really excited to have gotten the opportunity to chair this initiative and look forward to seeing what comes next for our group.”

Hiba Ahmad, community director at Brixton’s Advocacy Academy, said: “The association is an exciting and much needed new chapter in the history of Brixton.

“It is always so great to see communities come together to organise for their collective interest, and to be here today and hear the traders speak of a positive and bright future has been so inspiring.”

Brixton Village and Market Row Traders Association is accepting membership applications from traders across Brixton’s markets and will hold regular meetings to consider commonly faced questions and problems in the markets.

Brixton’s covered market were offered for sale last year by the current owners.
