Assertions by Summer Events in its new application to Lambeth council over Brockwell Live events are “desperate, unconvincing” and should be rejected, Protect Brockwell Park’s lawyers have told the council.

“Summer Events are treating the council and the public with contempt by just saying anything to get a certificate,” they said.

The campaign group also hit back at a legal move against it by Summer Events.

It said the company’s lawyers had sent “threatening and intimidatory” letters to the home addresses of campaign members.

Protect Brockwell Park said these letters fell into a category of behaviour known as SLAPP – strategic lawsuit against public participation.

SLAPPs are usually seen as attempts by wealthy business people and oligarchs to silence investigative journalists by bombarding them with expensive and time-consuming legal challenges.

The campaigners said the council “is ignoring the substance of the court ruling and the ongoing harm to the park and its users, and playing legal games to outmanoeuvre the courts and silence residents.

“That should alarm everyone who believes in fair governance and safeguarding scarce precious urban green spaces.”
