In the night garden at Max Roach Park

Local residents, gardening experts and members of local volunteer groups last night (25 November) braved the cold and dark to plant bulbs to bloom in spring in Brixton’s Max Roach Park.

They also gave the still-growing lavender maze in the park some TLC.

The night gardeners came from Father Nature – who oversaw the planting of the maze – Lambeth Parks, Goo dGym,  Friends of Max Roach Park, North Brixton Big Local, and Papa’s Park, the community park and café on Pulross Road in Brixton.

Police community support officers from the Brixton North Safer Neighbourhoods Team looked in to meet the volunteers and discuss their plans.

The next outing for the intrepid volunteer park keepers will see them boarding up the back of the football cage in the park to prevent rubbish from building up there, with support from the Metropolitan Police, and replacing the timber decking for the seating area.

The park has also benefitted recently from the installation of new play equipment.

The night gardeners attracted the attention of passers-by, but the queue for the Academy on the other side of Brixton Road were focused on getting to see 2hollis

  1. There’s something about the juxtaposition of this that speaks to me so loudly 😂. One side of the road, people queuing for the nightclub and on the other (my people), randomly planting spring bulbs for the whole community to enjoy 💝😍🌿.
