Trinidadian chef and entrepreneur Brian Danclair has literally cornered the market in Granville Arcade. No sooner had the owner of Fish, Wings & Tings – a hit since it opened in 2012 – launched his more refined tapas restaurant Danclair’s Kitchen in 2021, he spotted a gap in the Market for plant-based and vegan Caribbean food; and stuffed it with his latest venture, Veg & Tings, which opened opposite Fish, Wings & Tings last year.

Maureen’s Kitchen is known by regulars as Over The Wall – because jerk delights, ackee and saltfish, and stews were once passed over the wall directly from Maureen’s yard.

Umana Yana, 294 Croxted Road, SE24 9DA, Tel: (020) 8671 8227. Great Guyanese cooking from this humble takeaway outlet at the foot of Croxted Road. Goat curry roti, fish and vegetarian dishes all come highly recommended.

Etta’s Seafood Kitchen, 85–86 Brixton Village, SW9 8PS, Tel: (020) 3489 9394.A Brixton food scene pioneer … Etta cooks all kinds of fish with Caribbean flavours. There are homemade drinks for those who don’t take up the BYO offer. Everything is cooked from scratch so don’t expect fast food.

Negril, 132 Brixton Hill, SW2 1RS, Tel: (020) 8674 8798. Negril is also BYO. It’s good value and popular, especially for brunch at weekends, and serves the standard Caribbean comfort food as well as vegan options. At its busiest, service can be slow and the tables cramped.

Baker’s Dozen, 40, New Park Road, SW2 4UN, Tel: (020) 3256 0037. A bit far up Brixton Hill, but everyone raves about its range of patties, including lobster.

RapChar, 30 Brixton Water Lane, SW2 1PE, Tel: (020) 3793 8928. This small, upscale Caribbean restaurant has been getting great reviews, although, at the pricier end of the scale, it’s more of a treat.

Refill, 500A Brixton Road (entrance on Brighton Terrace), SW9 8EQ (020) 7274 5559. Open 24 hours, seven days a week, this popular outlet serving cheap and filling Caribbean staples works better if you know what you want when you get to the counter. Soups come highly recommended.
