Brixton Topcats basketball club is raising funds for a two-day celebration of its 40th anniversary.
Jimmy’s Jam 2025 – named for co-founder Jimmy Rogers – is due to take place on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August at Brixton Rec (Sunday) and Lilian Baylis technology school in Kennington (Saturday).
The club said the events will celebrate “not just our incredible legacy, but the community, coaches, players, and families that have made it all possible”. The roots of the club go back even earlier than 1985.
It said that “over the years, the basketball community in London has grown into something far greater than sport. It has become family.
“Too often, we don’t get the chance to celebrate the people around us until it’s too late. Jimmy’s Jam is our way of changing that, by giving flowers to the living while honouring those we’ve lost.”
Those lost recently include the legendary defence barrister Courtenay Griffiths KC, whose passing left a profound impact on all who knew him, the club said.
“A brilliant barrister, but also a beloved co-founder of the Brixton Topcats, alongside the late Jimmy Rogers. Together, they not only shaped the future of basketball in Brixton but also provided mentorship and guidance to countless young people in the community,” Topcats said.
“Courtenay’s dedication to justice, fairness, and the wellbeing of others extended far beyond the courtroom. His legacy, like Jimmy’s, lives on in the hearts of those whose lives they touched.”
The club said Saturday’s event will be “a carnival-style family event” with: food vendors and music; 3v3 basketball for kids; cultural stalls and merchandise; games, face painting, board games; and a tribute wall for those we’ve lost”.
Sunday at Brixton Rec will see a “battle of the coaches” and a basketball showcase with five teams going head-to-head – Brixton Topcats, Hackney White Heat, London Thunder, London Legends, and Wandsworth Sting.
There will also be an under-25s vs alumni exhibition game and under-12s future stars showcase.
All will be accompanied by live commentary, prizes, giveaways, and crowd energy.
