Brixton Rec closes to fit new heat system

Brixton Rec is to close for three or four days while a new energy centre, which the council says is to improve heating, hot water and overall reliability across the building, is installed.

The Rec currently shares infrastructure with International House, which is to be redeveloped under council plans for the “Rec Quarter”.

The council said the building will be closed from the evening of Friday 23 January, reopening from the morning of Tuesday 27 January. Swimming pools will reopen on Wednesday 28 January after checks are completed.

During the closure, Active Lambeth members can use any other Active Lambeth centre at no extra cost.

The council said the installation will mean

  • Installation of nine air-source heat pumps to run hot water, which are cleaner, more efficient and better for the environment
  • More reliable hot water, with better shower performance
  • Improved heating throughout the building
  • Better water pressure with a boosted, dedicated supply
  • More stable pool temperatures
  • Reduced risk of disruption from “recent pipework issues”

Last admission will be at 6.30pm on Friday 23 January, with the Rec closing at 7pm.

Bar the swimming pools, the Rec is due to reopen from 6am on Tuesday 27 January.
