Brixton’s Karibu Education Centre will be the venue for an emergency community meeting on Thursday (6 November) to build an effective local response to the devastation in Jamaica caused by hurricane Melissa.
It will be hosted by Lee Jasper, local campaigner for racial and social justice, and community partners.
“Hurricane Melissa has destroyed homes, livelihoods, and communities across Jamaica. Join community leaders, faith groups, diaspora organisations, businesses, and local authorities to build a united effective response,” said Jasper.
The meeting plans to:
- Coordinate immediate relief efforts
- Identify trusted routes for supplies and donations
- Press the UK government for humanitarian aid
- Mobilise the Jamaican diaspora to act together.
The Brixton branch of Jamaica National (JN) bank at 410 Brixton Road has already acted as a drop-off and collection point for donations, as has Hootananny.
The bank has also set up an I Support Jamaica fund to provide immediate relief and rebuilding in Jamaica. It said beneficiaries will include the most vulnerable, children’s homes, early childhood institutions, homes for the elderly, healthcare facilities, as well as community groups operating in the worst affected areas.
The Karibu centre is at 7 Gresham Road, SW9 7PH. The meeting is from 7 to 9pm; doors open 6.30.
