Juls Baby, the London-born Ghanian Grammy-nominated producer, DJ and writer, is mounting an exhibition at Downstairs in Brixton’s Department Store on Ferndale Road.
Running for five days from Sunday 8 June, it highlights connections between Brazil and Africa.
Juls, who has worked with artists including Lauryn Hill, Burna Boy, GoldLink, Masego, Tyler the Creator, and Wizkid, will also be streaming his film Travelling Man: Com Amor Brazil exclusively at the exhibition.
The documentary was directed by Juls and Oluwatomisin Okeowo. It has a soundtrack of new music from Juls which will be available on EP after the exhibition.
He says his film is “an ode to the enduring ties between the African continent and Brazil. This dates back from the 1800s.
“Through sound, story, and soul, I’ll be showcasing my thoughts and stories on my trip to Brazil exploring the deep cultural connections between Ghana, Nigeria, and Brazil – with a special focus on the Tabom community in Jamestown, Accra [Ghana], descendants of Afro-Brazilian returnees.
“From the music and spirituality, and shared rhythms of resistance, the parallels between West Africa and Brazil are profound.
“This body of work is a celebration of our mirrored histories, our blended identities, and the beauty that emerges when cultures intertwine across oceans.”
Tickets for the exhibition and screening are available at £27.80 via Eventbrite.
