Brixton-born bubble tea pops to the top

Brixton-born bubble tea brand TeaJoy was named “London Food & Drink Startup of the Year” at this year’s UK StartUp Awards.

Co-founded by Ning Ma and Jack Gaskin (pictured), TeaJoy began life in the Brixton Village restaurant MamaLan during lockdown.

Now the pair are gearing up to launch their first ready-to-drink cannedbubble tea range in August, featuring flavours like passionfruit andstrawberry and peach and mango with popping boba.

Judges said TeaJoy stood out for bold innovation, rapid growth, and “joyful approach”.

“We’re incredibly proud and grateful to receive this recognition,” said Ning Ma.

“This award celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit that’s been part of TeaJoy since day one.

“What started as a dream is now a reality, a bubble tea brand designed to bring more joy to everyday moments with every pop, sip, and smile.”

Bubble tea is one of the UK’s fastest-growing drink categories. The global market is projected to surpass $4.2 billion by 2028.

TeaJoy currently supplies more than 500 customers across the UK, from independents to national chains, offering easy-to-serve commercial bubble tea kits without the need for specialist equipment.

The forthcoming canned drinks are designed to expand this reach further, bringing bubble tea to everyday consumers through retail and e-commerce channels.

Regional winners now go on to compete at the UK national final, taking place in September at Ideas Fest in Tring, Hertfordshire.
