Blog double dogs of the week

We held over last week’s blog dog slot to bring you a special Christmas double dose of photogenic mutts. Although the pair aren’t cohabiting, they do hang out together regularly at Brockwell Park and clearly enjoy each other’s company.

The majestic mammothalike on the right is Malka, a seven-year-old Briard, or Berger de Bries. She is a comparatively small example of her breed, French sheepdogs so ancient they are depicted keeping the 8th-century Frankish ruler Charlemagne company in tapestries and paintings of the period.

Malka’s charming companion is Mucker (left), a four-year-old miniature labradoodle, also female. Readers who might expect to be looking at wool instead of wire may like to know that the pure-on-both-sides labradoodle can be wiry, flat-coated or curly.

When we met Mucker she was scoffing rabbit snacks from Herne Hill market in a matter-of-fact manner befitting her name. Malka’s favourite tasty tidbit is lightly simmered chicken, or poulet braisé, prepared in the kitchen of her Poet’s Corner home.
